What is a Caucus?
A Caucus Revealed
According to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary a Caucus is…
: a closed meeting of a group of persons belonging to the same political party or faction usually to select candidates or to decide on policy; also : a group of people united to promote an agreed-upon cause
Some states have primaries, some have caucuses, and some have both. In it’s simplest terms, people get together at a particular location and group together depending on which candidate they want to nominate as their candidate for the presidential race. Time is then given for each group to persuade people in other groups to come join their particular group. Groups that have less than a certain percentage of the overall turnout, will be dissolved and have to choose another group until there is finally one group that has more than 50% of the people at the caucus. That largest group’s candidate will then be that states victor and win delegates. A different number of delegates are needed to win the nomination to run for presidency depending on the political party affiliation. I will have a post soon that will simplify how the delegate system works for each party.
“Caucus” is actually a North American Indian word meaning “A gathering of the ruling tribal chiefs.”
