Proof of Insurance

Proof of Insurance

How much will it cost you to get a prescription filled if you do not have medical insurance?

It’s Monday morning and I just realized that I am coming down with a bad virus or sinus infection. “Man, this week is going to stink!” First off, I need to see a doctor. Well, maybe I don’t. Maybe I’ve had this virus or sickness before and I know exactly what it is and what medication I need. I know many Americans have recurring issues that require the same medications over and over. What do you do if you don’t have medical insurance? How can you afford to miss work, pay for the doctor’s visit, and pay for the medication? Well, if the system here in the US were fair to the consumer, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. However, the motto in the current society is “Money before people”, and it really is very sad.

So what do we do? First, you’ll pay about $60 for a doctor’s visit without insurance, or you can go to “Urgent Care” for $75. I think the “doctor’s” at Urgent Care, if they even are doctor’s, had to have graduated at the bottom of their class. I really feel like I can tell someone, “take these antibiotics” or “apply this salve”, which seems to be their answer for everything.

Secondly, you’ll pay whatever inflated price you have to in order to get the medication. I’ve bought medications that cost $15 a pill and I’m sure some of you have paid even more. For the sake of not over-estimating, let’s assume you pay $75 for the medication.

Finally, let’s say we’re being paid hourly at $15/hour. Now we’ve taken half a day to see a doctor, so we’ve spent an additional $75 in lost wages.

Now let’s calculate the total cost of getting the medication we need to cure our sickness. Urgent care visit at $75, plus $75 for the medication, plus $75 for lost wages. Now instead of paying $20 like most other countries pay for their medication, we pay $225. And that’s just for my medication. I can’t imagine how much it would cost if I was older and required multiple specialized medications.

How is this possible? Why do we elect officials to represent us that wouldn’t make sure our parents and grandparents are covered should they get sick? HOW. IS. IT. POSSIBLE? Why are we letting this happen? I don’t like to quote politicians but I’m sure he stole it from somebody else anyway. “We, are the ones we’ve been waiting for!” We have to stand up for ourselves now and make some changes in our society… even if they’re small changes. We don’t need to start out with world peace… just don’t vote for any politician who doesn’t pledge, and DO, the right thing.

I believe we can with your help. Make sure to let politicians know that you are ONLY going to vote for those that pledge to make sure EVERY person in the US is taken care of when it comes to health insurance.

I will be expanding the “projects” page in the coming weeks as I have a couple projects in mind that I will be working hard on to make sure our local elected officials are held accountable. Stay tuned!

This article really points out the unfortunate fact that the health care industry as a whole is no longer looking out for the public good. Developing a universal health care system would certainly help eliminate this problem. My concern would be the decline of the quality of the health care provided. But of course, if you’re one of the 40 million people without health care right now, then the quality can’t get any worse.

Well I think the main issue here is education.. I am a well educated person who has had their fair share of the run of the mill insurance plans in her day.. and honestly I discovered the Cincinnati Health Department’s services… I mean I am paying into a plan for United Healthcare Anthem this at what $70 a month and then getting a script filled for another $20!! At Cincinnati Health Depts clinics I can get 3 packs of birthcontrol for $3 a pack- and copay of $20 is hardly a big deal. They render services from pediatric care to the elderly and will refer you to specialists within the medical community for more complex medical diseases and conditions- just one of many services. Just food for thought….the 40 million people coould drastically reduce with this knowledge available- Cincinnati 513-357-7300
