I’m Sorry, You Can’t Buy Alcohol on Sunday’s Here…

I Can’t Buy Alcohol on Sunday?

Have you ever wondered why in some areas of the US you can’t purchase an alcoholic beverage with your meal before 1pm on Sunday’s, or why you can’t even purchase alcohol at all in some areas on Sunday’s?

I try to live a “normal” life… I work hard, visit with friends, read, watch football, and do some blogging. On occasion I may meet a friend for lunch on a Sunday and order a beer… “I’m sorry sir, it’s not 1pm yet.” And BOOM, it hits me… I live in a very strange place where an adult can’t purchase a certain type of legal beverage with their lunch… because it’s Sunday.

After traveling around I’ve found that in many cities you can’t purchase alcohol AT ALL on Sunday’s. Why have we as a society allowed this simple, yet personal freedom to be taken away from us? I believe there are two primary reasons why this is happening. First, many of the religious sects conspire to make sure that “God” is “respected” by not drinking on Sunday (unless it’s the blood of Christ of course), and they want to force their beliefs on eveyone in the community. Secondly, I believe it’s because most other people tell themselves it’s a minor issue so they do not have to invest the time it would take in order to change the law. We would rather just premeditate our Sunday drinking if we think we will want a drink on Sunday rather than standing up for our rights as a free person… as that would require work and effort. I truly believe this shows a minor sign of mental illness in our society. I also believe that laws and ordinances such as the one in question actually cause more harm than good.

Here are a couple hypotheticals. Follow me as we step into the shoes of 2 different people who are directly or indirectly affected by this nonsensical law.

First we will step into the shoes of “Mary”. She’s an Executive Assistant for a major law firm in a mid-sized city in the US…

“Whew, 5 o’clock, I thought it would never come! I can’t wait to meet up with Bill and see that new movie that came out this week.”

Mary and Bill enjoy a Friday night movie and she goes home to attend to a few things and get ready for bed. Saturday morning arrives and…

“Yaaawwwn… Wow, it realy felt good to sleep in today. I think I’ll have some coffee and run some errands.”

After running her errands she makes a couple phone calls and decides that she is going to go out on the town with some of her close friends. She heads home and puts her groceries away and reads a while before starting to get ready for the night. 7 pm comes…

“Well, I think I’ll get ready now.”

Mary get’s ready and meets with her friends at their favorite club around 9pm. They spend a couple hours at the club and then hop over to another club where they stay until about 1am. They all had a few drinks so they split a couple cabs in order to get home.

The next morning she calls Bill in order to give her a ride to pick up her car. They decide to have brunch at a local restaurant. Mary is still in a giddy mood from the night before and thinks that a mimosa (champagne and orange juice) might be good with her brunch.

“I’ll have a mimosa and a coffee please.”

“I’m sorry, it’s not 1pm yet…”

“Excuse me?”

Meet “Harry”…

Harry is a restaurateur and has been in business for 20 years. Recently, a local law was put into effect that does not allow him to sell alcohol on Sunday’s any longer. Being that his restaurant is primarily a sports bar, Harry has taken a large financial loss because of this new law.

Has Mary’s right as a free person asking to purchase a legal beverage been violated? Has Harry’s right as a business owner to sell a legal substance been violated? I believe they have both given up personal freedom. What’s Mary going to do next weekend? Maybe when she does her grocery shopping, her experience from the previous weekend will motivate her to purchase alcohol just in case she may want a drink on Sunday. We’re also injuring business owner’s rights by not allowing them to sell a legal beverage in their establishments. Will Harry move his business to another city? Can he afford to move?

We do not need to create laws because we think it’s what “God” wants or to “show respect” for “God” but rather we need to look at the psychological, social, and economic implications of the laws we put into place and put laws into place because it’s what the PEOPLE want and it’s what’s best for the PEOPLE and maintains there rights as a FREE SOCIETY. Just because a bunch of nutjobs have money or are so passionate about their beliefs on a certain subject, such as not drinking on Sunday, doesn’t mean we should strip the freedoms of everyone else.

I believe that we are psychologically predisposing a certain number of people to premeditate drinking on Sunday and ultimately, more people are buying alcohol than they normally would in order to be prepared for Sunday should they want to have a drink… and heck, since I have this alcohol, I might as well drink it!

Ultimately, this is another example of local government’s chipping away at the personal freedoms of everyone that’s a part of this “free” nation in the name of “God”, which is despicable to anyone of faith or values.

I agree that this law is absurd if it is mandatory/enforced per state or county regulations. I think it should be up to each restaurant owner individually, as to whether they want to serve alcohol (or permit smoking for that matter) inside their PRIVATE property.

How do you know people are buying more alcohol on Saturday to be prepared for Sunday? Are you speaking for yourself?
I believe God can help peoples emotional problems better than a “drink”. Can’t people go a day or two without alcohol;be it Fri., Sat., or Sun.? Try going to church on Sunday and drinking from the Living Waters that flow from the throne of God. That will give you the peace you are searching for.
Who cares about vanity plates? Why does that bother you? Maybe you do things other people don’t like. Let’s just mind our own business, and let people be themselves without trying to make them think like you!

It’s good to hear your point of view Judy. I once drank “Living Waters” and got dysentery, so be careful!

I would like to suggest that people who drink have “laws” too that benefit them that grind the gears of conservatives like myself. You have made many statements regarding “church people” that are your opinion, NOT FACT. The issue of drinking and drinking on Sunday is absurd. Most places used to CLOSE down and not operate on Sundays honoring it as the Lord’s day. I am not suggesting we go back to that, but at the same time I am also not slamming your right to consume alcoholic beverages with your meal.
What I have a problem with is what happens when those people are driving home from the eatery of their choice after drinking the beverage of their choice, and having the amount of their choice…
In our county we had to literally fight against an ordinance that would have allowed drinking at local pubs/bars until 5:00am. THAT IS RIDICULOUS. That means that people that had been drinking all night would be on the roads at the same time people were heading to work and school. Talk about getting fired up about something. If you really want to write about things that matter, how about seeing it from the other side for once. If you have children, you should at least think about it for their safety sake. Drinking and Driving kills more people every year in the US, than most diseases.
I know your whole point of this blog was to invoke emotion and stir up thinking, so congratulations…mission accomplished.

One last thing: Living Water will NEVER give you dysentery. You must have been at a corrupted well. Jesus Christ is still the answer and I sense from your attitude toward Christians that somewhere deep down you already know that. I hope that you will yield your life and your thinking to Him sometime soon. He will help you make the difference in your world that I sense you are trying to accomplish with this website.

Just because you do not believe and accept the power of God right now, does not mean that it does not exist. (Food for thought)

Thank you for your feedback Conservativedad. I may write about the belief of or acceptance of “God” and all his power in future posts, but I didn’t in this one.
The statements I made about “many of the religious sects” ARE FACT, unless there is another group of people that are fighting to disallow drinking on Sunday that I’m not aware of. Remember, this is a post about not allowing drinking on Sunday.

I also clearly stated that we should make laws for the people because it’s what’s best for the COMMUNITY. Of course we should make laws to protect children and if you have a bunch of alcoholics in your community that would drink all night and drive drunk in the morning and kill kids, then your community should absolutely make laws to ban sales of alcohol all night. I just believe we shouldn’t make those types of laws for anything other than community safety and not because people want to respect their “God”. What’s next, no drinking on Saturday in order to please Muslims?

Stay tuned for more posts that you will be interested in!

Unfortunately Matthew, I do not have enough time to “argue” with you. You are displaying one of the attitudes that is wrong in America today. A lack of respect for and fear (reverence) of GOD. Yes, the same God that gave us His Word…the Holy Bible. This country was founded upon the principles of God’s Word and our Founding Fathers were VERY CONSERVATIVE in their religious beliefs.
What is next? Telling churches what they can and cannot preach from their pulpits without the pastor being locked up?
My point is that there are enough laws already out there that are against the Church and Christians in general, this is just a respect issue.
Maybe you should pull your head out of the sand and have a conversation with the God who gave you the air you breath and spoke into existence the very world in which you live.
I am all for our rights as Americans, but sometimes we can get soooo caught up in “Democracy” and our “rights” as Americans that we can forget about the UNDER GOD part of our Allegiance. I am all about American Rights and if you think that it is your right as an American to drink on Sundays before 1pm in the afternoon…More power to you. I just do not like your slamming of God and Christians in the process.

The bottom line is our Nation is no longer Under God as it should be and there is a great need for repentance and turning back to God. This is just my opinion, and I know you have yours.

I agree with the author here, we have to keep a separation of church and state.
