Corporations: Looking Out for the Small People

Corporations: Looking Out for the Small People

Bill O’Reilly is looking out for me, but who’s looking out for you?

Here’s a fact that everyone needs to face: Corporation’s #1 priority is to make a profit for their shareholders. So I shouldn’t have to say this, but guess what, that means you’re #2 on their list… if you’re lucky! Usually #2 on their list is their trade secrets, and I will have an article dedicated to Non-Competes, Trade Secrets, Confidentiality, and Non-Solicitation Agreements that corporations use as leverage to enslave their employees in the coming weeks. So #3 will be those agreements. Where are we now… #4 maybe? Well, we do need the staplers! The fact of the matter is this… corporations only use people’s productivity and ideas, they could care less about the actual people. Corporations don’t care about janitors, accountants, sales people, managers, or even the CEO’s (and many times, even the customers!) You feel secure in your job? Tell that to an ex-employee of Enron, Worldcom, Adelphia, US Airways, Global Crossing, and the list goes on…

Why are we so loyal to corporations?

Why do they make us feel secure, sing their tunes, and buy their products that they put on television, radio, magazines, and newspapers? Here’s why: Psychology 102. It’s not the psychology a lot of us took in high school or college, but rather an advanced course in psychology. This course in psychology tells marketers what words, images, sounds, and other stimuli to use and when and where to pump them into your brain. This happens on a subconscious level and we have no defense to this intrusion on our brain… unless we disconnect from modern society altogether. But I don’t want to disconnect from society and I don’t want these weasels using advanced psychology to mess with my brain. “Break me off a piece of that ___ - ___ - ___”. Can you fill in the blanks? Sadly, I believe you can fill in the blanks even though you never wanted to memorize that jingle. That jingle will probably remain in your head for the rest of your life… implanted by a corporation. So what can we do about it?

Here’s what I want people to do… LEARN A NEW SKILL OR INCREASE YOUR WORTH SOMEHOW. Start that small business you were thinking about, write that book that you started, sell that idea you have, design those clothes, build that website, learn a skill, go back to school… do ANYTHING, but please, please, please, do everything in your power to stop being a slave to large corporations before you die. Even if you accomplish your goal when you’re 90 years old and you die when you’re 91; when you’re on your death bed you can say to your family and/or yourself… “I did it.”
